Zoya Summertime Collection Summer 2011 Swatches and Review

Here's part two of the big Zoya summer collection. It's called Summertime and it's six creme shades.

Areej. This one's a deep pink / fuchsia creme. Very smooth and creamy looking, slight muted quality to it.

Breezi. A teal-blue shade. More blue than teal, but has a definite teal tone to it on the nails. My picture makes it seem brighter than it is; in real life it has a soft dustiness/murkiness to it that just doesn't come across in my picture.

Kieko. A red-purple creme. Much more red toned in real life, more of a berry than a true purple. Think Jessica Feather Boa from the Burlesque collection to give you an idea of the shade, it's similar to that but with a little more blue to it.

Mira. A medium purple creme. Again, my picture makes this purple pull too blue toned, it's much more red toned in real life. It's actually really similar to those China Glaze Grape Pop / Rescue Beauty Lounge Mismas type purple cremes that came out in the past few years. It's just a touch lighter and warmer toned, but still very similar.

Sooki. Bright cherry red creme. This is my favorite of the collection. It is loud and obnoxious and AWESOME. It's one of those flashy bright reds that you can see from a mile away. It seems to have a less dense creme finish, like it's almost a jelly, but not quite squishy enough looking. Very hot.

Tamsen. My second favorite in the collection! Can you believe it? A collection with two purples and a blue and my favorite colors are the red cremes... But I'm totally serious. This is a great red. I took two pictures to try to convey the warm orange tone that's in this compared to the coolness of Sooki. This is like a brick red, or even a red-orange. It's muted and a bit dusty looking like some of the other shades in this set. This one changes in different lighting, too... In artificial light it looks more pure red to me, but in sunlight it looks almost entirely orange. Really like the warmth and softness of this particular red.

The formula on these was great. Smooth and consistent, not too thick or thin and no difference in formula across the whole set. Opacity was great, too. They only needed two coats, but I did three just to see how it looked. These do not suffer from the extremely long dry time that the Sunshine shades have, these have a normal/average dry time.

Overall, I can't say I think this is a super exciting collection. I do like the shades, but I feel like I've seen them all too many times before- medium pink creme, purple-berry, dusty teal, medium warm purple, red creme... Nothing really unique or new. Sooki and Tamsen really stand out to me. The vivid brightness of Sooki and the warm rustiness of Tamsen make them very visually appealing compared to the muted pinks and purples in this set. Breezi is a really nice interesting shade, too, but it doesn't excite me the way Tamsen and Sooki do.

Nice formula, though!

Zoya Mod Mattes Collection Summer 2011 Swatches and Review

In addition to the Sunshine and Summertime shimmer/creme sets for summer, Zoya has also released a mini collection of matte finish brights. They are:

Lolly. A bright pink creme matte. I like this shade of pink in the matte finish. It's a cooler shade of pink than OPI La Paz-itively Hot Matte and it has no shimmer.

Mitzi. A yellowy pea green matte creme! This is my favorite of the set. It really stands out on the nails. It's bright but murky at the same time. More dirty and yellowy than OPI Gargantuan Green Grape Matte.

Phoebe. A bright blue matte with blue shimmer. The only shimmer finish matte in the bunch. The shimmer is very subtle but it adds a nice satiny glow to the matte color. Think satin ribbon. Also, I just noticed that I have foundation in my cuticles. Ew. Sorry about that.

Since Phoebe has some shimmer, I was curious to see how it looked with topcoat to make it shiny:

It's nice glossy, too! The shimmer is still subtle but it looks electric. The blue on blue with a touch of green is really eye-catching.

The formula on these was good. You seem to have more time to work with these than previous mattes and that helps application somewhat. Your best bet is still to completely load the brush and cover the nail in as few strokes as possible, but you don't have to do it as quickly with these. They do dry completely in only a few minutes and they don't require topcoat so they're great for when you're in a hurry. They are much more sheer than other mattes and I needed three coats to make them look perfect. The wear time is average for mattes; I wore Phoebe for two days with no chipping or tipwear until the end of day two when a large section of polish on my index finger cracked off unprovoked... It's so weird when that happens. It just goes POOF! and it's gone.

I love the mod look of these. Very funky and even a bit psychedelic. It's nice to see more colors of matte, I'm getting a little tired of all the matte greys and blacks! Matte nail polish isn't over yet... wonder if anyone else will do more mattes this year?

Zoya Sunshine Collection Summer 2011 Swatches and Review

My first summer collection post of the year! A welcome change from all the bland colors I've been staring at lately. The Zoya Sunshine set is the shimmer half of their summer collection. It reminds me a little of their Sparkle collection from last year, tons of glittery sparkle in these. Take a look.

Apple. See what I mean? Look at all that gold sparkle. This shade is a light yellow-toned green with crazy amounts of sparkling gold flecks. It looks like it could be a nice match for Color Club Magic Elf... I haven't compared them on the nail yet, but they strike me as being extremely similar.

Faye. This might be my favorite of the collection. I don't think I have another color quite like this. It's a warm prune purple base with insane gold sparkle. It's so bright. And it's not exactly glittery; the particles are really smooth and thin and shiny, not chunky or rough like true glitter. They blend together and make a really glowy smooth look.

Kimmy. Such a hard color to capture, it's so rich and colorful and sparkly. My camera can't handle it! The gold metal flakes and the saturated warm red go so well together. It looks like fire.

Reva. This color is much cooler and saturated in real life, the lighting is washing out the color in this picture. It's the cool toned counterpoint to Kimmie. It's a strawberry shade... except imagine that instead of seeds, the strawberry is speckled with 24 karat gold.

Rica. A golden coral glimmery shade. I like the depth in this, it's not a flat shimmer at all. The base of these colors is sheer and the gold flecks look really cool through the sheer base.

Tanzy. A light orange with gold fire. It's a little like Gabrielle, but the flakes are smaller and shinier.

The formula on these was different this time around. The biggest difference is the drying time, which is much longer than I'm used to from Zoya. The texture is a little thicker on these compared to the similar Sparkles, and they're more sheer so those factors could contribute to the long dry time. The Summertime half of the collection doesn't have the same long dry time. These were on the sheer side and I found that they looked best with three coats. I'm wearing three coats in all these pictures. Application was good aside from the thicker than usual texture.

All of these colors are so glowy. They're luminous. I really like how they look like they're glowing when you're wearing them. The colors are bright and cheery, and the cheeriness is only amplified by all that golden glow.

My top picks are Faye, Kimmy and Reva. All of them are nice, but those three wow me the most. Faye, because it's unique and gorgeous and Kimmy and Reva because they're so rich and colorful and the red shades look amazing with the gold metal flake.

And, I'm sure you've all seen the news about the promo, but just in case, I'll post it for you:

Zoya Intimate Collection Spring 2011

Happy new year, everyone!

First new collection post of the year, yay! It's Zoya's new Spring 2011 collection: Intimate.

Caitlin. I know it looks totally blue here, but that's just the lighting. That whole, "it gets dark at 4:00 :(" thing... But really, it's grey, like the bottle color. It's a medium grey creme with purple tones in it, like a lighter version of Kelly.

Dannii. Isn't Dannii pretty? It's a purple shimmer that reflects red and gold. Not quite a true duochrome, but definitely iridescent looking! The shimmer in this is that signature Zoya shimmer- pearly, a little bit flaky, big particles, slightly like a glass-fleck finish.

Dove. Appropriate name. It's a light dove grey creme. So pretty. I've been craving colors like this lately. This seems like more of a neutral grey- it doesn't seem to have blue or green undertones in it at all- just pure, creamy, cozy light grey.

Gemma. I wish I could have gotten better pictures of this! Maybe I'll try again when the sun comes back. I think this is the star of the collection- unexpected, unique, and awesome! It's olive drab with a violet duochrome! I tried to capture the purple flash in the pictures, you might have to enlarge to see the veins of purple shimmer. This brings me back to the 90's when colors like this were all I wore. This one makes me so happy.

Jules. This one's fascinating! It looks taupe overall, but it's made of different tones of light gold shimmer and it seems to have a bit of purple in the base, too. The same kind of shimmer as Dannii. Not frosty or streaky, just lots of little specks of metallic foily particles.

Marley. This one is a light pastel purple, but it seems to have a touch of light grey in it to keep it from looking too bright. And instead of being a plain creme, it has a hidden pearl shimmer that makes it look really soft and creamy. It does have a very subtle pearl finish on it when you view it in sunlight, but it mostly looks like a really soft creme finish.

The formula on these was great. They were neither runny nor thick, I didn't have any application issues at all. The polish went right where I wanted it to. Opacity was good- most colors only needed two coats, but I think Gemma and Jules look better with three. I did three coats in these pictures. Drying time was good (I used Qtica basecoar and Seche Vite topcoat when I did full manicures with these colors). They seemed to wear really well, too. They didn't chip at all by the time I removed them.

My thoughts? Perfection. I think this collection is absolutely perfect for spring. One word keeps coming to mind when I look at all these colors- cozy. They remind me of cozy cashmere sweaters. Some of the shades even remind me of rainy spring skies. They're soft and muted but they're not dirty or blah looking- they have a freshness to them that keeps them from being bland. Plus, it's a spring collection that isn't pink-heavy! It has two kinds of grey and a green duochrome.

I've really been craving these types of colors after all the dark vampy fall and winter colors. The soft greys are especially appealing to me. And Gemma? Amazing. Green/purple duochrome is kinda my thing, you know? How could I not love it? In fact, I love all the shades- I don't dislike a single one, they're all so nice. Soft, cozy, rainy, no pink... It gets my seal of approval. I'm really happy with these shades.

This collection will be available on Zoya.com starting January 15th, 2011.

Zoya Fire and Ice Collection for Winter/Holiday 2010

I've been complaining that almost none of the recent collections have really excited me very much and saying how much I hope someone would release a collection that totally thrills me... I think this might be it! I've had these for a couple weeks now and I'm still giddy every time I look at them!

Now that it's fall my lighting situation has been less than ideal. I've had to re-do these twice and still I'm not happy with how they look. That warm autumn sunset light does not make for pretty pictures. I apologize in advance for the gross lighting but I've tried to take more pictures to make up for it.

Here we go. Fire and Ice.

Crystal. Light blue foil with gold foil flecks. I have heard that this is similar to OPI Reflecting Pool, but I don't have it to compare so I can't say for sure, but I thought I'd mention it just in case. This is a really gorgeous icy looking polish. Great winter shade. I love the way the gold sparkles against the blue.

Gloria. This one is a little more complex. It's rose based foil with warm pink and iridescent gold reflections. There's a lot of different tones in it so it has a nearly duochrome look when it's on the nails. Every time I look at it I see more colors sparkling at me. It's a pink I would actually wear, it's that beautiful.

Lisa. My pictures of this didn't come out so well despite me taking dozens of them, so I'm going to try to explain it the best I can to give you a better idea of how it looks in real life. It's red-based, a lighter shade than Sarah but with sort of a faint pink tone to it. The finish is extremely sparkly glass-fleck type glitter like the shades in the Sparkle collection. It's much more saturated in real life, not so faded looking like it looks in my pictures. Very, very sparkly.

Sara / Sarah. I don't know which it is- my bottle says "Sara" without the H, but the spoons say "Sarah". The color is really rich in this polish. It's so festive and pretty. It's a really great deeper shade of red, not quite the bright candy red of Lisa, more of a fruit punch type of red. Cool toned. Super mega sparkly. Same sparkle finish of Lisa, just a deeper, cooler red. The perfect Christmas red! My pictures don't capture how nice and colorful this is, if you're thinking of ordering spoons, take a look at this one!

Tiffany. A peach foil! I don't think I've seen many of those. It's a little coppery but on my nails it looks more peach and champagne with some soft gold and silver than reddish copper. I keep using the word 'sparkly' but that's really the best way to describe all these colors. They sparkle like crazy. It's like opening up a treasure chest full of gold and jewels. They need one of those chime sparkle sound effects to go with them when you wear them. Kinda like this:

Valerie. This is really an amazing color. I like all the colors in this collection but this one is just... wow... I mean, look at it! It's purple, it's sparkly, it has gold and pink duochrome... What's not to love? This may be my favorite Zoya color of all time. It takes all the elements I love from sparkly duochrome purples like Zoya Mimi, Claire's Magic, Milani Totally Cool, et cetera but it gets rid of the sheerness and darkens them into a dramatic, sparkling vampy purple that has my name written all over it. It's a red based purple with pink sparkle and depending on the light and angle at which you view it you'll see red and gold sparkle as well. You can see some of it stuck to the bottle. So gorgeous.

There are two distinct finishes in this collection: foil and sparkle.

The foils: Gloria, Crystal and Tiffany

These are the foil shades. If you're unfamiliar with a foil finish, a foil is made up of tiny smooth metallic particles and they combine on the nail to create a sparkly metal effect. They're reflective and smooth, they don't show brushstrokes and they look just fine without topcoat. The foils in Fire and Ice are all multi-tonal- you can see lots of iridescent color when you wear them. Top notch, very complex.

The sparkles: Lisa, Valerie, Sarah.

And these are the sparkles. If you have the Zoya Sparkle collection from this summer you'll be familiar with Zoya's sparkle finish. It's glittery, but not in a traditional glitter type of way. Traditional glitter is a very defined particle, usually round or hexagon shaped, made of plastic with shiny coating. They almost always have texture in a polish- think Zoya Roxy, OPI Absolutely Alice or China Glaze Atlantis. But the glitter in the sparkle finish polishes is a smooth shiny pearl particle- almost like tiny glass beads embedded in the polish. They don't have much of a texture and won't feel bumpy like a traditional glitter particle. I'm not sure what exactly they're made of but they make me think of glass or crystal.

The formula on these was great. The sparkle shades were nearly one-coaters, extremely opaque. The foil shades were more on the sheer side and needed two coats. I did two coats of everything. The sparkles dry to a dull finish so topcoat is a must (topcoat is a must regardless, though!). The foils dry glassy even without topcoat. Application is smooth and even. Drying time is good. Removal isn't difficult but you'll likely be left with some sparkly stuff on your fingers afterward.

Overall, this is a kick-ass collection. I crave sparkles. I love every single color and I'd wear them all. Obviously, Valerie is my favorite. These are nice winter shades, icy blue and festive red, but no reason at all you couldn't wear them year round. I think Tiffany is actually a nice beachy looking shade for summer. All the shades are packed with life and sparkle and magic and they make me want to stare at my fingertips all day. Distracting!
